Those lazy hazy crazy days of summer
It's way too hot to do anything outside so we went and saw Inception this morning on the humongous I-Max screen at Tysons. It was crazy/insane and thought provoking to say the least. After the movie Laura and I ran over to the church to pick up MK from her 5 days at girls' camp. She LOVED it. She sat on the couch and told us about it for about an hour and then was out like a light for 5. She was WIPED. I have been amusing myself lately by constructing a faboo new quilt, knitting boo coo baby sweaters for babies in the ward, and working on indexing the 1905 Manhattan, New York census. It's fascinating and really fun. In an unrelated story--we had an earthquake here yesterday. How whack is that?

The Dog Days of Summer (already)
What the heck? It's only July 7th and the temperature on our deck for the past 3 days in a row has hit 106 degrees. I really shouldn't complain after last winter:
6 months later:

And basil:
We had such a nice Fourth! With Bruce and Mikey gone to scout camp it was just Laura, MK and me. We went to the Copan's for a fun cookout and then to our amazing hometown's fireworks. I love Vienna:)
Today I went here:
It was awesome as always:)

My July
Last weekend Mikey, MK and Bruce had a great time at Youth Conference in Kirtland. MK was was home for less than 2 days before she was off to EFY. On Saturday I will go and pick her up at 7:00 AM at SVU. Mikey and Bruce leave for Scout Camp that same morning at 11:00 (they might overlap with MK by an hour or so). Mikey gets home the following Saturday. The next Tuesday, MK leaves for girls camp. She gets home the following Saturday. Then the next Monday Mikey and Bruce leave for High Adventure (a 200 mile bike ride over 6 days through PA and MD). They'll be back on Saturday. That brings us to the last week in July when on that Monday MK starts a local basketball day camp and Mikey is off to EFY (also at SVU). A week off for everyone and then MK starts field hockey for Madison. If you think this is a crazy busy time, guess again! It's totally vacation time for me. The kids are away at camps having the time of their lives, no lunches to make, no carpools to run, no seminary to wake up for. It's heaven I tells ya! All I've been doing is knitting, quilting and doing family history work. And do I feel the least bit guilty? Heck no! Best thing about 4th of July weekend? Well after the Town of Vienna special events and fireworks and since Mikey and Bruce are usually at Scout Camp every year, I'll have to say it's the Leesburg Outlet sales. Ain't America great?

Oops! My Bad!
Today Laura and I were wondering if MK was going to get anything at the 8th grade awards ceremony this year. I vaguely recall getting an envelope in the mail from Thoreau the other day, but it didn't occur to me that it was anything but the usual newsletter. Well, duh. As it turned out the letter was to inform me that my child was to receive something and that I should get my booty to the ceremony which I obliviously didn't do. She ended up with 4 awards which, incidentally, when added up is about equivalent to the amount of awards her 6 siblings got combined. Fortunately MK could not have cared less that I wasn't there. And was I ever happy not to have to sit through the 2 1/2 hour ceremony. She got math and science awards plus a character award and the Presidential fitness one. MK rocks!!!!

Waxing Nostalgic
After 30 years of exclusively using this singer featherweight
for all of my sewing needs, it is finally going into retirement! The machine is actually @ 60 years old and it still works-- just needs a little tweaking. I used this to make tons of clothes for myself and my kids-- I even sewed my wedding dress on it!
Classic seersucker suits I made for the twins:

But quilts were what really put old featherweight through the paces. Here are a few of the ones around the house:
I made this one in 1987 in honor of the Boston Celtics when they won against the Lakers in the final that year. True story. The pattern is even called an Irish Chain.
