The Belated Christmas Post

On Christmas Eve we always have G-ma and G-Pa over for a Christmas buffet.  The missionaries also came this year along with our friend, Scott.

Bruce loves to spoil the Elders--this year with remote control trucks.
We loved having Tom home.  He made us two racks of the best ribs I have ever had using his original dry rub recipe topped off with J-Dawgs sauce.  I also had him inject our ham with a pineapple brown sugar honey concoction that ended up getting squirted all over the kitchen.  It would go in one spot and find another way out.  Sort of like a geyser.
These two showed up on Christmas eve night.  First stop was the temple lights on the way home from BWI.  MK, Mikey and I also went downtown with them to do a little sight seeing.  Jordan spent every minute he could flying his helicopter.  Everyone got one.  The air space in our family room kind of reminded me of Grandma Nielson's multitude of hummingbirds at her feeders.  J&L also did some running while they were here.  And Laura and I did a little shopping in G-Town.  We found some great bargains and in the small world department, ran into Marilyn and her girls.  The most fun we had was playing a game called Buzzword.  Bruce and Tom were ridiculously good at it!
Mikey wearing his gift from Laura.  Fingers crossed that he gets in.  It was kind of sweet going to church before opening presents this year.  Of course we all came back and changed into something more comfy.
MK with the most coveted shirt at BYU.  At least when it's won.  Laura got it for her through her job as the intramural secretary:)  Jordan is still trying to legit win one.
 Jess and her Phantom CD.
I can never go back here.  Looking at the picture makes me think of only one thing.  Having to go pee.  One of my offspring who will remain nameless (but her initials are MK) really needed to go.  This is a girl who I don't think has ever gone to the bathroom at school.  She was born with a bladder of steel so it came as quite a surprise to me that she felt like she would explode if she didn't find a potty.  Up the hill from this house is a nursing home.  As a family was coming out the door we slipped in.  She found a ladies room near the entrance but it was out of order.  Did that stop her?  Of course not.  She did her business (sans flushing) with me waiting guard at the door.  I was sure we were going to get busted.  It was a relief (in more ways than one) when she was finally done.  That is until we made our way to the exit and discovered that we couldn't get out.  It had a punch key code and we were trapped.  UGH!  I tried the door anyway.  The alarm went off.  We stood there with red faces while a nursing home worker looked at us with disgust in his eyes and let us out.
We have visited the King of the Inflatables house at least 5 years in a row.  It is the ultimate in tacky.  It is fun to walk around and take it all in.
G-ma and G-pa D love the tradition of the lights and warm krispy kreme donuts afterward.
Laura, MK's friend, Hadley and MK before the new years dance.
After the dance we had the youth over for pancakes and eggs and sausage.  They didn't stay as long this year since Nick brought fireworks so after eating they went out to the cul de sac to set them off.  Then they all went home.  Thank goodness for 11:00 church this year!
Our yearly puzzle was a 2,000 piecer.  Bruce put together at least 1,500 of them.  It was a wicked one.  Tom spent New Year's helping to open the second J-Dawgs in Orem.  Laura and Jordan flew back to "the void" aka Provo, on New Year's day.  We were sad to see them go.  May 2012 be as good to us as 2011 was!

G-Bread

Tonight was our annual gingerbread house decorating party.  MK invited her seminary class.  There are tons of conflicts in December so we usually only get a few kids and this year was no exception.  But it was still a lot of fun.

T'is the Season

Last night was our awesome ward Christmas party. There was caroling, Santa, treats and stories. But the best part was visiting with good friends:) I took Sharma Sleight's amazing Cranberry Salsa.

It's too good not to include the recipe:
1 12 oz. bag of fresh cranberries
3/4 cup sugar
1 jalapeno pepper, seeds removed
2 green onions
2 T fresh cilantro, chopped
1/4 tsp. cumin
Blend all ingredients in a food processor or a blender. Let it sit overnight. Pour over cream cheese. Serve with wheat thins. Addictive.

I also made this fudge (sans the nuts):

MK with her good friend Janessa:

Joined by Katie and Jesse. Only two of them got the tacky sweater memo.

Mikey and MK before tonight's stake dance:

I've decided to embrace the "simplify and reduce" motto of provident living by cutting way back on my Christmas decorations this year. In other words, I was too freakin' lazy to go all out and decorate downstairs too. I'm perfectly content with my main level:)

Calories Don't Count the Last Thursday of November

How can it be that we are dragging out the Christmas stuff already? It has been so incredibly nice this weekend that we figured we ought to put the lights up outside today instead of when it's freezing later. We had such a fun Thanksgiving. The first thing I do every year to kick off the holidays is to make cranberry orange nut bread. It is some seriously good stuff. It was just going to be the immediate family for dinner but everything changed when we were in AZ and the James family signed up for the missionaries. They didn't know that we had already asked them to come a month earlier so we thought, what the heck, let's invite them too. Then we invited the Moffitts. So at this point, counting the two sets of missionaries, we thought: cool. We have 20 people now. But... then we wanted to invite Leti and her kids since they are awesome and her husband is in Afghanistan. And when we found out the Bournes weren't going to Atlanta after all, we had to have them too. So in a matter of 4 days we went from having 10 to 32. It was so much fun!

Thanksgiving wouldn't be Thanksgiving without football! And Dallas won their 4th game in a row. Dad is one happy camper.

My favorite Thanksgiving food is green bean supreme. Thanks for making it, Grandma!
